지난 시즌에 이어 이번 시즌에도 다시 선보이는 오버사이즈 발마칸 코트입니다. 아일랜드 도네갈의 Magee에서 직조한 도네갈 트위드로 만들었습니다.

Magee는 1866년 아일랜드 북서부 도네갈 타운에서 시작된 트위드 하우스입니다. 도네갈은 오래전부터 집집마다 양모를 잣고 베틀을 돌리던 지역으로, 이곳에서 짜인 원단은 지명을 그대로 이름으로 갖게 되었습니다. Magee는 지역의 손베틀 직조공들이 짠 트위드를 모아 세상에 알리는 일에서 출발해, 160년 가까운 시간 동안 도네갈 트위드를 대표하는 이름으로 자리해 왔습니다. 지금도 도네갈 현지에서 원단을 디자인하고 직조합니다.

원단은 블랙과 차콜 그레이 실을 큼직한 헤링본으로 짜 올렸습니다. 두 색의 차이가 크지 않은 톤온톤 배색이어서, 멀리서는 깊은 차콜 한 가지 색으로 보이고 가까이 다가가야 헤링본의 결이 드러납니다. 표면에는 밝은 그레이의 가는 털이 곱슬곱슬하게 올라와 있어, 어두운 색임에도 평면적이지 않고 빛을 받으면 은은하게 결이 살아납니다. 도톰하고 밀도 있는 조직이어서 일반적인 코트보다 보온성이 뛰어나며, 두께에 비해 손에 닿는 감촉은 Magee의 원단답게 부드럽고 유연합니다. 한 시즌으로 끝내기에는 아쉬운 원단이어서, 같은 스타일 그대로 다시 준비했습니다.

실루엣은 클래식한 발마칸 코트의 방식을 따랐습니다. 밑단으로 갈수록 A라인으로 퍼지는 인버티드 코트와 달리, 어깨에서 밑단까지 보다 일자로 곧게 떨어집니다. 어깨선이 없는 래글런 슬리브와 넉넉한 품, 무릎 아래로 내려오는 긴 기장으로 두꺼운 니트나 재킷 위에도 여유 있게 걸칠 수 있습니다. 허리에는 탈부착이 가능한 벨트를 두었습니다. 벨트 없이 입으면 여유로운 실루엣 그대로 떨어지고, 벨트를 묶으면 허리선이 잡히며 전혀 다른 인상이 됩니다.

앞여밈은 첫 단추만 겉으로 드러내고 나머지는 안으로 감춘 히든 버튼으로 정리해, 헤링본의 면이 끊기지 않습니다. 카라 안쪽에는 비조를 달아, 카라를 세워 고정하면 목을 감싸며 바람을 막아줍니다. 소매 끝에는 버튼으로 조절하는 탭을, 몸판에는 손이 자연스럽게 들어가는 사선 포켓을 두었습니다.

코트를 열면 도큐먼트 특유의 안감 구성이 드러납니다. 등과 몸판 중심에는 한국의 전통 패브릭인 누빔지를 사용했습니다. 누빔은 천을 겹쳐 촘촘한 간격으로 줄지어 박아 만드는 한국 고유의 방식으로, 오래전부터 겨울옷에 쓰여 온 만큼 가볍고 따뜻하며 쉽게 틀어지지 않습니다. 그 바깥으로는 탄탄하고 마찰에 강한 면 옥스포드 안감을 둘러, 입고 벗을 때 힘을 받는 앞판과 밑단을 받쳐 주었습니다. 두 원단이 만나는 경계는 사선으로 교차하도록 재단하고, 가장자리를 바이어스로 감싸 마무리했습니다.

아일랜드에서 짠 겉감 안쪽에 한국의 누빔을 넣은, 겉에서는 보이지 않는 도큐먼트의 방식입니다. 인생 최고의 코트를 만나보시기 바랍니다.

An oversized balmacaan coat returning this season after its first release last year, made in a Donegal tweed woven by Magee of Donegal, Ireland.

Magee is a tweed house founded in 1866 in Donegal Town, in the north-west of Ireland. Donegal has long been a place where wool was spun and woven at home, and the cloth made here came to carry the name of the region itself. Magee began by gathering the tweeds of local handweavers and bringing them to a wider world, and for close to 160 years it has been one of the names that stand for Donegal tweed. Its cloth is still designed and woven in Donegal today.

The cloth is a broad herringbone of black and charcoal grey yarns. The two are close in tone, so from a distance the coat reads as a single deep charcoal, and the grain of the herringbone shows only as you come closer. Fine, curling hairs of lighter grey rise from the surface, so even in a dark colour the cloth is never flat, and its texture comes quietly alive in the light. It is thick and dense, making the coat warmer than most, and for its weight it is soft and supple in the hand, as Magee's cloth tends to be. It was too good a cloth to leave to a single season, so the style returns unchanged.

The silhouette follows the classic balmacaan. Unlike the Inverted coat, which opens into an A-line toward the hem, it falls straighter from shoulder to hem. Raglan sleeves free of a shoulder seam, a generous body and a length below the knee let it sit easily over heavy knitwear or a jacket. A detachable belt is set at the waist. Worn without it, the coat hangs in its full, relaxed line. Tied, the belt draws in the waist and gives the coat a different character altogether.

Only the top button shows at the front. The rest are concealed behind a fly placket, leaving the surface of the herringbone uninterrupted. A tab set under the collar fastens it upright, closing around the neck against the wind. Buttoned tabs adjust the cuffs, and slanted pockets sit where the hands naturally fall.

Opened, the coat shows the lining construction that is particular to Document. The centre of the body and back is lined with nubim, a traditional Korean quilted fabric. Nubim is made by layering cloth and stitching it in close, even rows, a method native to Korea and long used for winter clothing, so it is light, warm and holds its shape. Around it runs a cotton oxford lining, firm and resistant to wear, supporting the front panels and hem where the coat takes the most strain as it is put on and taken off. Where the two fabrics meet, the line is cut on a diagonal crossing and the edge finished with bias binding.

- 표면에 올라온 가는 털과 불규칙한 짜임은 원단 고유의 특징이며 불량이 아닙니다.

- 마찰이 잦은 부위에는 보풀이 생길 수 있으니, 당기지 말고 가위로 정리해주세요.

- Dry clean recommended.

- Do not machine wash, bleach, or tumble dry.

- After wear, brush gently along the grain with a soft clothes brush.

- Store on a wide-shouldered hanger in a well-ventilated space.

- Remove the belt and store it together with the coat.

- The fine raised hairs and irregularities in the weave are natural characteristics of the cloth, not defects.

- Pilling may occur in areas of friction; trim with scissors rather than pulling.
